WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE?
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used in the East for over 2000 years to restore and maintain good health. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is dependent on the body’s vital energy - which is known as Qi - moving smoothly through the body in a network of “channels”. If this system becomes unbalanced, illness may result. Treatment with acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the energy channels to restore this balance. In Chinese herbal medicine a combination of herbs are chosen according to their properties in order to restore the balance in the body. Ingredients used are different plant parts such as roots, stems, flowers, leaves and barks

THE TREATMENT
During the initial visit you will be asked about current symptoms and treatment, your digestive system, sleeping pattern and emotional state as well as your general medical history. A diagnosis according to Traditional Chinese Medicine also includes feeling the pulse and an examination of the tongue.

Treatment can consist of either acupuncture or herbs or both according to the complaint. Acupuncture treatments are usually given on a weekly basis or with longer intervals if combined with herbs. Herbal preparations in the form of teas or tablets are taken twice or three times daily.

The length of treatment required depends on the individual but some change can usually be felt after a few weeks. Some conditions can respond quickly to treatment, others may require a few months.

WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE FEEL LIKE?
Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to those used for injections or blood tests. They are very fine, and solid rather than hollow. When needles are inserted the sensation is often described as a tingling or a dull ache. Needles can be inserted for a few seconds only or left in place for 20 minutes or more, depending on the effect required. During treatment many people experience a feeling of relaxation.

IS IT SAFE?
I am member of both the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) and as a member I am subject to the Codes of Practice of both organizations which regulate standards of hygiene and handling of needles and other equipment and dispensary practice.

I use disposable, single use acupuncture needles which are sterilised, stored in sealed packs and are disposed of after each treatment.

WHAT CAN ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE TREAT?
Both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can treat a wide range of complaints.

The following conditions are commonly treated:
•    Anxiety and depression
•    Back pain and other joint or muscle pains
•    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
•    Digestive complaints incl. IBS
•    Gynaecological problems incl. painful periods, PMS, infertility, menopausal syndromes
•    Headaches and migraines
•    Morning sickness and other pregnancy-related conditions
•    Respiratory conditions incl. asthma, hayfever, sinusitis
•    Rheumatological conditions incl. rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
•    Skin disease incl. eczema, psoriasis, acne
•    Urinary conditions incl. cystitis

It can be used when a person simply feels unwell without being ‘ill’ in the Western sense. It can also act as a preventative measure to enhance a person’s constitution.
